About Us

South Atlantic Utilities was started in 1970 by the late Thomas A. Smith Jr. South Atlantic Utilities designed, installed, and operated community water and wastewater systems in rural areas of Coastal Georgia and South Carolina.

This area of the State became more populated, and many rural areas have become suburban. To assist with managing the company as it grew, Thomas Smith’s sons joined the business, starting Chatham Water Company, Middle Georgia Water Company, Coastal Georgia Water Company, and May River water Company. Water Utility Management, LLC was created to serve as a management company for all of these companies, and also manages water and wastewater assets on a contract basis.

In 2009, Middle Georgia Water Company merged into South Atlantic Utilities. And in 2010, Water Utility Management acquired the water and wastewater systems owned by Sunbelt Utilities, making Water Utility Management the premier water and wastewater management company in Southeast Georgia. It currently operates 112 community water systems and 3 community wastewater systems located in 11 counties and serving over 12,000 households.
