Introduction
From time to time, Water Utility Management may offer reduced rates for water service to
those customers who may choose to be a chlorine checker. Chlorine Checkers provide an
invaluable service to Water Utility Management, and to their fellow customers. Chlorine
checkers monitor the level of residual chlorine in the water at their home spigot and
record those results. Additionally, they inform Water Utility Management immediately
should a problem arise with the level of residual chlorine in the water.
Residual chlorine
is the amount of free chlorine that has not been 'used up' in chemical reactions. Chlorine is
added to the water to chemically kill any bacteria and to mask odors in the water caused by
dissolved sulfur in the water. After all of these reactions, some chlorine remains in the water
to allow it to travel through the whole distribution system and arrive at your house chlorinated.
The residual chlorine level tested at your home should be between 1 and 9 parts per million (ppm)
(a 0.1 or a 0.9 on the test wheel). As long as the chlorine is within these levels, everything is
perfect and Water Utility Management requires no notice (unless the water tastes or smells either
too much of sulfur or too much of chlorine). If the residual chlorine level falls outside of this
range, please call us immediately and we will adjust the chlorine level in the water.
How To Become A Chlorine Checker
From time to time, Water Utility Management will send a mailer to a subdivision to replace a chlorine
checker who is leaving or to obtain a new chlorine checker. If you desire to become a chlorine checker,
please respond to this mailing. Usually, the job will be given on the basis of aptitude, good billing
history, and on a first-to-call basis.
Chlorine Checker Instructions
For testing the chlorine at your home, please follow these basic instructions:
- Set up kit and identify all of its components
- Open spigot/ faucet fully and allow water to run fully open for 20-30 seconds
